Animal Series by LEM

  • LEM is an art group formed in a petrol station in Finland in 2008 while the members were enjoying a pit stop on a high way on their way to Helsinki. They had met previously while chopping wood on a night watch for a wood-firing kiln at Fiskars. The group consists of three designers, Saara Kaatra, Laura Itkonen and Lotta Veromaa who has all studied at MA Applied Art and Design. The name LEM derives from the second names of its members and was mutually agreed upon as the members like the Polish writer Stanislaw Lem.

  • ‘Animal Series’ is the first project by LEM and it was sponsored by Iittala Group. ‘Animal Series’ tells stories through animals in everyday ceramic tableware, creating new life and meaning for everyday common objects.

“Sweet fairytale scenery and figures like the unicorns, pink rabbits and canary birds are in contrast with the macabre themes of blood, death and loneliness.” -Asta Boman, Senior Advisor at Ornamo Art and Design Finland.

The vessels are made using old Iittala moulds that are out of production: bowls, cups and plates that have simplistic shapes, familiar to Iittala Groups tableware. By placing animals in the vessels to tell a story, the group is triggering a new life and meaning to these objects. Telling stories that change depending on the viewer, in the same time questioning and stretching the limits of mass production. The easily approachable animal figures create their own private miniature worlds into each vessel that can be endearing, terrifying, humoristic or twisted depending on the viewer. LEM leaves the stories to the viewers imagination; what stories and meanings do they find behind the humour or macabre?

Ryijy

  • Handmade ceramic mural

‘Ryijy’ means traditional woven wall rug which is a decorative art form unique to Finland. Geometric shapes were, in addition to floral and human figures, a popular subject in them in the late 19th century. ‘Ryijy’ ceramic mural is especially inspired from the geometrical shapes of the traditional ryijy rugs.

The whole consists of five forms of different shapes that fit in many ways to each other transforming into different works of art. Creations made of it are perfect to enrich both private and public spaces in indoors and outdoors.

  • Ryijy can be modified to customers need. Please contact me by email for more information.

View 1

  • ‘View I’

    2022

    porcelain, stoneware, Finnish red earthenware

    Size: 160 cm x 80 cm x 5 cm

‘View I’ was part of With the Naked Eye -group exhibition held in Voipaala Art Centre in Summer 2022. The core of the material-based contemporary art exhibition was the encounter between man and nature. In my ceramic mural, I have combined elements and surfaces of man-made architecture and its landscape with nature's free, organic and uncontrolled environment. The work 'View I' is one perspective of what the view created by these elements is like.

The exhibition was organized by two associations, Textile Artist TEXO and Artist O, presenting the best of Finnish textile art, ceramic art and installation art from more than thirty artists. Curated by Anna-Kaisa Haanaho, Jaana Woll, Kaisu Koivisto and Teemu Salonen.

Restaurant Juuri -project

  • Custom-made plates for awarded Restaurant Juuri, Helsinki. Project executed in a collaboration with Heidi Aulikki Puumalainen.

Locality, freshness and authenticity are the cornerstones of Ravintola Juuri's kitchen philosophy and through these principles we set out to design plates suitable for the restaurant . The basic idea behind the plates was to emphasize the feel and visuals of a material and techniques. Each plate is handmade and this is especially evident in the glazing, which is unique in each plate. The plates were also locally produced, as our shared studio at the time was located within walking distance of the restaurant.
