My story

I’m a designer and artist (b. 1981) living and working in Helsinki, Finland. My primary focus is on creating visually intricate and tangible architectural ceramics and collectible and sculptural design objects that are both unique and valuable. I find the intersection of art and design to be the most compelling place to work, as it allows me to explore the potential of materials. This area offers an exciting opportunity to push boundaries creatively and experiment within the context of different projects. I hold a Master’s degree in Applied Art and Design (2010) from the Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture and I’ve run my own studio since 2016 after working as a visual designer for several years.

My creations blend art and design, combining handmade sculptural elements with the precision of 3D printing. My use of materials highlights their unique characteristics, while carefully crafted shapes and forms tie everything together. Contrasts are a unifying factor in my work, creating dynamic and visually striking pieces.

“Itkonen mixes contrasting materials, techniques, textures and colors in bold combinations. From metallic surfaces on soft ceramics to rough chunks of red clay on delicate porcelain, the surprises keep coming.”

Being the maker and the designer is the source of my inspiration. I am very material-based creator; by carrying out numerous tests and experiments, the material leads in its own way towards the most intriguing result. I see myself collaborating with the material. It's a constant compromise especially with clay.

With international recognition, my works have been showcased in Milan, London, Paris, and Tokyo to name a few. I have received national and international awards, including the Emerging Talent 2019 award by Dwell and the up-and-coming Talentshop 2019 by ImuDesign and Habitare Fair. Currently I’m working on a large public space art project for Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) that will culminate in 2024.
